When cooking outside

4.7.2025
Image of a fire down to its embers but still a new fire overall, with trees in the background. The picture is taken in an alcove by the canyon’s river.

When cooking outside, some considerations for system you might need (outside of the obvious, such as potential heat source requirements)

  • A moment to plan out your space. Keep pantry things in one section, cutting in another, etc. Worth taking this time so that when things are busier, you’ve already got some structure built in.
  • A way to see/know the time easily. Example: bring a phone and prop it up.
    • This helps you know if you moving too fast or slow in prep or in some other arena
  • Towels, little ones. Quantity depends on the amount of work you’re doing and space you have
  • Paper towels
  • Keep/make a trash so you can keep working area clear. Or one for compost, if facilities allow, and one for general.
    • Bonus: bring a small bin that can be moved around easily and emptied into a bigger container as it fills.
  • Band-aids
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Gloves. If reusable ones, then go for a pack
  • Apron, if possible, to keep tools handy and out of the (table) way

&& things that are more nice to have of course...

  • Multiple bowls
  • Multiple tables
  • Just all the space
  • And hands! Support
